What is ChatGPT?
Meet the most popular AI assistant, and its cousins Claude, Gemini, and Copilot.

A conversation with a computer
ChatGPT is a website and app where you type a question or request, and an AI writes back to you, like exchanging messages with a very knowledgeable helper. It was created by a company called OpenAI and became the fastest-growing app in history because it is so easy to use.
You might ask it to write a thank-you note, explain a medical term, or plan a week of dinners. It answers in seconds, and you can keep the conversation going: ask follow-up questions, request changes, or say 'explain that more simply.'
ChatGPT has company
ChatGPT is the most famous AI assistant, but not the only good one. Claude (made by Anthropic) is known for clear, thoughtful writing. Gemini (made by Google) connects well with Google services like Gmail and Maps. Copilot (made by Microsoft) is built into Windows and Office.
The good news: they all work the same way. You type what you want in plain English. A prompt that works in one will work in the others, so you do not need to pick the 'right' one to get started.
Does it cost money?
All the major AI assistants have free versions that are more than enough for everyday use. Paid versions (usually around $20 per month) offer faster responses and extra features, but there is no need to pay while you are learning.
How to start
Visit chatgpt.com in your web browser, or download the ChatGPT app on your phone. You can create a free account with your email address. Then just type a question, any question, and press Enter. That is the whole secret.
